WELCOME!
To the Air section of the Green Box!
Air quality is becoming increasingly important to monitor as discussions continue on how to mitigate the challenges of climate change. In the UK, agriculture and forestry account for about 7% of our national greenhouse gas emission total in comparison to around 10 to 12% worldwide. Even though this is a below average figure, the responsibility remains to be among the leading industries to reduce our contribution even further.
For the purpose of the Green Box, we are going to focus on Lichen as an indicator of air quality. Lichen has long been recognised as being a useful indicator of air quality. Some are unable to survive in areas where nitrous oxides and ammonia are present, where others may thrive. Through the correct identification we can monitor areas where nitrogen levels are higher than others for example.
How to get started –
If this is the first time you have visited the Green Box website, then have a look around and go to the ‘myGreenBox’ tab from this page. LEAF members, log in using your username and password. If you are new to LEAF there are instructions on how to get your username and password. This will take you through to the links to help you find out more information and upload any observations.
Good luck!
