  • Coombe Farming

During its 60 year history, Coombe Farm has always been open-minded about how farmland and farming should develop. We have moved from the days of horse drawn ploughs and heavy manual labour of the 1940’s and 50’s, through the 60’s and 70’s, when mechanisation and intensive farming seemed to offer the most obvious route for the future, to the 1990’s, when we took the view that organic farming was a much more obvious route for us to take. Today, all of our 1500 hectares are farmed organically and we have encouraged neighbouring farmers from whom we buy milk to become organic as well.

The Potato Council promotes the health benefits of potatoes to the general public, showing how potatoes are low in both fat and calories and packed full of vitamins and minerals. The industry invests significant amounts of effort in teaching children about healthy eating and showing how potatoes are grown. Many of the industry's farmers work hard to re-connect children to their food, by spending time working with children in schools and on their farms, showing how they plant, grow and harvest their crops.

  • Rustler Produce Ltd

Onions as we all know are essential - everyone uses onions, the Housewife, Chefs, Processors - they all need onions. Because of their widespread common use onions are, of course, not very exciting. Well, that’s the general view - however, we at Rustler not only know our onions but are proud of them! Five years ago Rustler began as a joint venture between Whitworths Growers Limited and Russell Burgess Limited. The JV was formed to fill a gap in the market - a company dedicated to supplying first class quality onions, coupled with excellent service and a commitment to R & D. The joint venture created a larger business facilitating efficiency and stronger management. The ultimate aim was to give the company’s customers the best offer possible in quality, service and value. We love our onions! Rustler has nine expert growers, producing some 1,100 acres of onions and 275 acres of leeks, all of our growers are Farm Assured and some are members of LEAF and the FWAG Biodiversity Scheme. Our growers are based on some of the best soils in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. We have one of the most advanced storage complexes in the United Kingdom, with 9,000 tonnes of box cold storage and 2,800 tonnes of CA storage.

Sherwood Produce was created in 2002 and comprises a group of 8 East Midlands based farmers and growers; between us we farm almost 7,000 hectares in and around Sherwood Forest. We grow both conventional and organic crops, and our members operate as one through centralised crop planning, agronomy, harvesting, packing, marketing and distribution. The group ethos is to sensitively combine modern food production with environmental protection, both at a local and global scale. Packing currently takes place on farm at our own site based at New Farm, Redhill, Nottingham; we are, however, planning a brand new and bespoke low carbon packing facility. This will be highly energy efficient and built from products that cause as little environmental damage as the current technology will allow.

Soilessentials was set up by three farmers to pool their precision farming experiences and offer advice and services to other farmers. We aim to establish a dedicated group of precision farmers who will work together to explore all branches of precision farming and share their experiences. We will supply this group with all their precision farming requirements ranging from data services to the supply of software and hardware. We recognise that in a fast moving technical industry farmers need a service that can evaluate new developments and provide up to date advice. Farmers also need to be confident that all parts of their system will be compatable. As part of the Agrial group, an agricultural cooperative formed to maintain and develop the relationship between people and the land, it is no surprise that we should take such care when minimising the impact of our processes on the natural environment and the health of our fields and farms. • Syngenta Crop Protection UK Ltd

Syngenta is a world-leading agribusiness committed to sustainable agriculture through innovative research and technology. The company is a leader in crop protection, and ranks third in the high-value commercial seeds market. Sales in 2007 were approximately $9.2 billion. Syngental employs over 21,000 people in more than 90 countries. Syngenta is listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SYNN) and in New York (SYT). In the developed world it has become the norm to walk into a supermarket and choose from a wide variety of food products of very high quality. It would not be possible to maintain the supply and quality we now expect, at today's prices, without using some crop protection products. The key is to strike the balance between using as few chemicals as possible whilst delivering the consumer's expectation on food quality and affordability. Crop protection products are designed to protect crops from attack by pests, weeds and diseases. Their use is not just only about producing higher yields, but also about optimising the use of scarce resources including land, water and labour.
